If any audio on a Web page plays automatically for more than 3 seconds, either a mechanism is available to pause or stop the audio, or a mechanism is available to control audio volume independently from the overall system volume level.>

Explanation

When audio (or video with audio) plays automatically, it must last less than three seconds or there must be a way to pause/stop it. This makes sure that the audio doesn’t stop someone listening to their screen reader, or using their speech recognition tool. It also stops the audio from overwhelming people with certain cognitive disabilities.

Requirements

  • Audio or video content that plays automatically lasts for three seconds or less;
  • Audio or video that plays automatically and lasts for more than three seconds, can be paused and/or stopped.
